In 2007 I created eight Charlie and Lola board books. These are concept books aimed at the very young: Actions, Opposites, Colours, Things, Shapes, Numbers, Clothes, Animals. My Charlie and Lola picture books are usually eight-hundred words and some of the board books are just thirty. I found it bewilderingly difficult to write a narrative using so few words.
